Can't hurt, my advice, disable all internet going onto that computer. If you are on a wireless network run virus scans on all computers. Download some antivirus software if you don't have any already. The more programs the more likely you are to catch somehing. Reboot into safe mode and run all the virus scans and see if you pick anything up.
Hope that helps but you probably know it all already.

You might be paranoid . But, if you're sure something's slower, check your processes. See if anything is using too much CPU or if a strange process is running (google it and it'll tell you if its safe or not). To be safe, you could also dowload AVG 8 Free edition - works very well in my opinion

Yea as Sbux said, check you processes. I had a nasty little bug that had a firefox process open constantly even if I wasn't connected to the internet. And I also recommend AVG free, works fine, although full edition is always better

don't be negative about ur friend (or ppl u have on IM), cause i caught one of those viruses -.- cause a friend of mine had it on MSN ... and the only way to remove it was format C:/ .. since it only did spam with some strange url on chats i was not worried.. but my computer became slow as hell after a couple of days

I hate IM viruses.. sucks...
My best method to combat virus would be: download a program called HijackThis, run it and have it scan and save a log file, it basically scans your computer and tells you wants running. You can either go through this yourself, and terminate the process, or post it over at geekstogo forums, and they normally take a short while analyzing it telling you how to combat the virus. Its also good to have process explorer from sysinternal, you can get it from microsoft technet, its basically what it says, and its hella more powerful then taskmanager.
Hope that helps . Some IM viruses arn't lethal tho, and it maybe your friend only, who has it....

What I do when I'm worried about virus', I do a hijackthis log check, if all the running process' are fine, I then do a virus scan.
Sometimes however what I do is take out the hard drive, and mount it in an enclosure and scan it on a different computer- so if the virus is clever enough to mess with the AV, it'll be found on the untouched computer.

that's some smart thing to do ...
i'm normally in my ubuntu installation, so i don't get many problems with viruses and whatsoever.. but the other day, i was downloading Adobe photoshop 7 trial from download.com and i got a Trojan / spyware whatever, that was always showing a page to download total antivirus 2009 blablabla... but i was running it on wine through linux.. so i could test first before i was on windows.. guess who would be owned...

Pretty sure its near impossible.
Firefox has so many security precautions it's ridiculous. You'd have to have some sort of 0-day active-x exploit, and I doubt somebody with the skills to outsmart Firefox would be posting around links to a blank page to infect them; they'd rather hide it in an iFrame inside of an inconspicuous looking webpage and have it infect you without your knowing.
[Edit] aaaand I just read your last two posts. lol =p

I format windows principal partition (format C:\\) , and all problems are gone ... it's not easy to get your computer infected... if you pay enough atention you would be ok with no antivirus at all ..
