Hey I was wondering if it is possible to get a higher resolution on my monitor. My current one is 1280 x 1024 and I have a 20" monitor (fullscreen). My older laptop is a 17"(fullscreen) and it can get 1400 x 1050. How come I cant get that. By the way I am running Vista Ultimate.

If you cant go higher on your display settings then try to update your video driver then try again.

Your pixels are big, simply put. My 20" iMac is at 1680 x 1050. But my iMac is mostly likely newer than your monitors, thus having smaller pixels.

Find out the brand of your video card and model.
When you know the brand, go to their website.

It won't go any higher that that unfortunately, that's the maximum for your monitor. Older laptops have higher resolutions, im not sure why, but if you compare new laptop to older laptops, the new ones always have a smaller max resolution (my old sony vaio could go to 1400x 1050, but my HP only goes to 1280x800).
If you're video card supports it, you could get a bigger resolution with a newer, bigger monitor.
Long explanation

Graphic Card Drivers can definitely increase the resolution though only upto a certain limit (i.e the monitor's full capacity)

Okay I heard of people talking on other sites about programs to make the monitor artifically simulate higher res. or something like that. Possible...?

Ok, let me give you a one word answer - NO. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a higher resolution (although you can get one that makes your screen "scrollable" - it will just give you more space and confuse things).
You cannot do it, you need a new monitor. Even if you got a new graphics card, your monitor would not be able to support a higher resolution
