Early this morning, John Gruber detailed most of what we will be hearing today from Apple. The 15" MacBook Pro will get a solid aluminum frame, eliminating the plastic trim from previous MacBook Pros. The style will mimic the recent aluminum iMacs, with a glossy, black-bordered bezel. The redesigned laptop will also have a MacBook-style magnetic latch and the same chiclet-style keyboard that is currently used in the MacBook, MacBook Air, and the Apple Wireless Keyboard. No surprises there.
The 13" MacBook will gain an aluminum casing, matching its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air brethren in style, and will get LED backlighting for the display.
The MacBook and the MacBook Pro will also get an all-new, all-glass, button-less, multi-touch trackpad. "This is not like the current software option where you can enable 'Tap to Click' in the trackpad preferences, but instead a glass trackpad that acts as a physical button, with a click you can feel," wrote Gruber. The updated notebooks will also use NVIDIA graphics chips, as rumored, with the MacBook Pro gaining dual GPUs. Apparently, CPUs will more or less remain the same.
The MacBook Air will actually receive no aesthetic changes, but it will get the new NVIDIA graphics chips and much larger drive options: a 120GB hard disk or a 128GB solid state drive.
The most surprising revelation, though, is that a single white MacBook will stay in the line-up at $999, technically breaking the $1,000 price barrier. The $899 price point touted by previous rumors will actually be a 24" LED-backlit Cinema Display, confirming rumors from last night. And, there will be no new 17" MacBook Pro announced. The current 17" model will remain in the lineup for the time being.
