Chicago (IL) - Google's new browser has zoomed past 1% market share in just ten hours after its release yesterday at 3:02 p.m. EDT and reached almost 1.5% earlier today. Although it is too early to tell which competing browser makers were hit by Google’s new software, the initial numbers numbers indicate that Chrome is off to a good start.
According to Net Applications, Chrome crossed 0.5% just two hours after its release. At midnight (EDT), Chrome surpassed 1% market share. The browser hit 1.48% share of the browsing market at 4 a.m., eventually stabilizing at about 1% over the course of the following hours. According to the data published by the market research firm, Chrome held 1.06% at the time of this writing.
The spike does not come unexpected, especially if we consider the enormous reporting on Google Chrome within the past two days. Google’s own news service indicates that more than 3000 articles covering Chrome were published on Tuesday and Wednesday.
But 1% of the worldwide browser market is huge. It is difficult to estimate how often Chrome may have been downloaded, but considering the fact that there are currently about 1.46 billion Internet users, it would take at least 14 million downloads to keep the 1% mark at a stable level – at least if the Net Applications data is somewhat comparable to the data provided by Internet World Stats.
Even if Chrome isn’t a perfect browser yet, Google certainly has managed to deliver an impressive launch.

if someone didn't see this coming then they must be blind. i must admit, i think that for some users Chrome might just be a little TOO simplistic but underthe hood using classic about:wildcard url's you might find yourself discovering many new things about this new web browser. Also the fact that a link for the download is featured on the Google homepage helps quite a lot and in an internet where the browser war is a constant thing, Googles immediate 1% take over of the market within two days of a Beta release (it still isnt the real deal, you have to remember that) means that IE8 might not make as big of a hit as expected. I think Google's timing on this release had a lot to do with the recent release of the IE8 beta. Many IE users i predict will switch over to Google Chrome within the next fiscal year. With this, we can start to see the beginnings of the base of an operating system. Google is one of the leaders as far as WebApps go with a plethora of web applications such as Google docs, which gives the user the ability to create rich text documents online along with spreadsheets and slide presentations, Google Calender, Google Reader, Google Mail and especially Google desktop which essentially incorporates all of these. With Google chrome coming preloaded with Google Gears, a recently developed WebApplication API that allows web applications to have offline functionality (thats only the beginning of what Gears can actually do) I think that Google is well on their way to being able to create a full fledged workstation. Maybe it will be the next SplashTop, like the VooDooIOS that runs on the recently launched VooDoo pc line which adds functionality to the computer without having to boot into a full OS like Windows, Linux, or OS Ten. All we need now is a version of NetHack from Google

If IE users switch to Chrome then Google's browser will easily become the #1 browser, I mean isn't IE still the most popular browser out there?
I may have to give it a try but I just dont like the look of it, with a decent skin I would use it for sure.
Thanks for the news

I use it for my everyday stuff now simply because it starts up so goddamn fast and i can get alot more done without waiting for loading...
Speed is an important factor considering that most people will only wait for 3-5 secs for a page to load so someone who is not too familiar with computers would be far more impressed by a fast browser by the familiar Google than one with and impressive feature set such as Firefox or Opera. However i'm sure more experienced pc users will stick with there current browser until Google can bring something more to Chrome.

Firefox - 71.74% Safari - 14.69% IE - 7.17% Opera - 5.26%
Still a pretty large increase

Apparently you can't revert back to IE7 after installing the beta and if you upgraded to XP-SP3 it makes that permanent too so i'm staying away from IE8 for now.

@Callan: the homepage is local not remote and doesnt even require an internet connection, while your browsing it just takes a snapshot of the site and adds it into the history, really all that homepage is is a visual history, wish it were like speed dial for Opera tho

There we go, Chrome now accounts for 1.01% of the traffic at Galaxy GUI
Firefox 71.24% (-.50%) Safari 14.57% (-.12%) IE 7.43% (+.24%) Opera 5.16% (-.10%)
as you can see, chrome is eating away from every browsers market share - except IE's
