Each week starting tomorrow, I will be choosing a user of the week which will have his own special colored username and will be able to access ALL of the forums.. and will feel special

I think if you made the portal the home page more people would actually read whats on the front of it.

portal is the home page where news, updates or a blog can be posted. I use my portal for all the above.
