June 4, 2008 (Computerworld) Reports circulated Wednesday that Apple Inc. may demo the next iteration of Mac OS X next week or even release code to developers in preparation for an early-2009 launch.

According to an account on Mac enthusiast site TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog), Apple may provide early copies of Mac OS X 10.6 at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which opens Monday and runs through next Friday in San Francisco.

I have learned that OS X 10.6 may go gold master by December 2008 in an effort to start shipping it in January 2009 for the MacWorld 2009. Mac OS X 10.6 will be a milestone release for Apple, because it will leave PowerPC completely behind for its 64-bit clean version.

This information makes us wonder about universal applications, how much longer are they going to be alive? With Apple leaving pre-Intel Macs behind before the end of the decade, this could mark the end of the Intel transition, as Apple will be focusing only on the newer Mac architecture which will leave many PowerPC users in the dust, if they are any left.

Well, all the 'Universal' means is that it contains the code for both architectures, and there are applications out there (like XSlimmer) that goes in and strips away the PowerPC portion of the code to make the application smaller. As to leaving PowerPC people behind, while it's true that they will no longer be able to upgrade their machines, they will still be able to continue using them till they see fit to upgrade. At that point, though, the PowerPC architecture will have been out of manufacturing for 3 years (I believe, correct me if that number is wrong). Considering that laptop life expectancy is something like 2-3 years, and due to the rather blatant forewarning of new things to come when the Intel Macs were released, I shouldn't think that too many people still using PowerPC machines wouldn't find an upgrade almost necessary at that point. Just my opinion, of course.

No, Its going to be Released in January 2009. So technically yes, they do have it but its not nearly as stable as any of the other releases out there right now, not even as stable as Tiger.
